What’s in the Bible?

So… you may have all heard of these dvds, we’ve had them pretty much since they came out (thanks Jody Toombs!) and LOVE them. I haven’t really made a habit of doing reviews, but I have been meaning to recommend these movies… and since my life is quite boring these days I thought I’d find something worthwhile to blog about. πŸ™‚

What’s in the Bible? is a relatively new DVD series from VeggieTales creator Phil Vischer designed to walk kids and families through the entire Bible. There are about 4 dvds released so far, and I think there are 9 to come.

I have honestly never seen anything this smart, yet this simple. My 4 year old watches these and comes away with REAL understanding of serious theology and hears Bible stories presented in non-childish ways (Bunny trail… (yeah Donna!) …a pet peeve of ours are books and songs that make major historic and even tragic Biblical events into nursery tales. Like… Noah’s ark is not about a boat full of cute animals, it’s actually about the punishment and destruction of nearly the whole human race (and His faithfulness to preserve the righteous). But I haven’t found that to be the case with What’s in the BIble, and yet it’s still incredibly child friendly. Take for example this retelling of the story of Abraham and Isaac…

One morning we were laying in bed and overheard Justus instructing Juno that she needs salvation, she needs rescuing, because we are all sinners and the penalty of sin is death. He told her that Jesus is her Saviour and He was God’s rescue plan to save her from her sins. I don’t remember all of his exact words, but I do remember that he was right and that he really did understand the concept of and need for salvation. Nothing is sweeter than hearing your children getting it and sharing it. This is a clip from the second dvd that begins the subject of salvation…

And can I just say that I LOVE the fact that they begin talking about salvation and God’s rescue plan right from the beginning! They tie things together so that in watching the entire series, our kids will really grasp the wholeness and continuity of Scripture and God’s plan. (The Jesus Storybook Bible does this as well, a friend let me borrow her copy and we love it too!!)

And look how they explain the laws in Leviticus!! (wish for all these vids I could share the whole thing, these are such short snippets of much fuller presentations…)

There is nothing more important to Jon and I than that we teach our children the Word and ways of God. Our job is not to save them, but to train them up. As they learn to obey and submit to us, they will learn obedience and submission to God. As we live our Christian walks in relationships, in home, in work, in ministry; we are training them up in how to live out faith. As we teach them God’s Word, we are providing them truth to stand on, a foundation to build their world view from. That is what God has tasked us with in raising our children, and we have found these dvds to be an excellent tool/resource to that end. There are lots of tools and books and talks and opportunities outside of this series obviously, and we take advantage of many other moments and resources to share Christ with our kids. But well… like I said, these are awesome! πŸ™‚ Plus, Jon and I get a kick out of some of the characters, like Sunday School lady with her flannel graph, and the scatting Brother Louie.

And if that isn’t enough… here is Phil Vischer’s “About” for What’s in the Bible?:

And…and…and… just in case you haven’t heard of jelly telly, go check it out! It’s now free!!
